Understanding Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): Early Detection, Treatment Options and Reconstruction After Skin Cancer Surgery

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer in Australia, particularly in Queensland where chronic sun exposure is extremely common. Fortunately, when detected early, most BCCs can be treated very effectively with excellent cosmetic outcomes.

There are several subtypes of BCC, including superficial, nodular, infiltrative, micronodular, morphoeic (sclerotic), pigmented, and basosquamous variants. The superficial and nodular types are generally considered lower-risk forms, with a lower likelihood of aggressive growth or nerve invasion. In suitable cases, these subtypes may be treated at SKEEN using advanced ablative laser technology, avoiding conventional surgery while still achieving very high cure rates and excellent cosmetic outcomes.

Higher-risk subtypes such as infiltrative, micronodular, and morphoeic BCCs usually require carefully planned surgical treatment. As long as there is no evidence of nerve invasion, these lesions can often be successfully managed with advanced skin cancer surgery. At SKEEN, we perform precise reconstructive procedures using local skin flaps, borrowing nearby skin with matching colour, thickness, and texture to achieve the best possible cosmetic and functional result.

In areas where there is limited surrounding skin available, we may perform full-thickness or split-thickness skin grafts using skin borrowed from another carefully selected area of the body. Every reconstruction is individually designed with meticulous attention to detail, aiming for both complete cancer removal and optimal healing.

Our clinic also provides comprehensive aftercare support, including complementary healing laser treatments and scar laser revision when appropriate, helping to further improve cosmetic outcomes following surgery or laser treatment.

In the uncommon situation where a BCC demonstrates nerve invasion or more advanced behaviour, we can arrange urgent referral to our trusted colleagues in radiation oncology within both the private and public hospital systems. Throughout this process, our team continues to support and guide patients until treatment is completed and the best possible outcome is achieved.

Many years of experience and the trust of our happy patients remain the strongest reflection of the level of care we strive to provide every day.

If you notice a changing spot, non-healing lesion, recurrent scab, or any concerning skin change, early assessment is important. At SKEEN, we provide comprehensive skin cancer assessment, early detection, advanced imaging, and a full range of modern treatment options tailored to each individual patient.
